Volunteering

is about putting yourself out there without seeking anything in return. The Marikina Filipino-Chinese Fire Brigade Volunteers explain their philosophy in this way. The crew is going above and above the call of duty to keep their towns safe, led by Fire Chief Roger Py. The brigade must continue attend to the daily risks that wreak havoc across the city, such as fires and other rescue missions due to natural disasters, in addition to participating in civic and social activities relating to COVID-19 relief efforts. In reality, while they work 24/7 in disaster evacuations, medical missions, and cleaning operations, they are being urged to do more, especially after back-to-back typhoons crippled several areas. “We were unprepared for the epidemic and the recent calamity that struck the Luzon capital, but we resolve to keep doing what we have promised to do in order to serve the community,” he said.

To go to the school at the foot of Mt. Pinatubo, some teachers must travel for at least eight hours. Another challenge they confront is advising illiterate parents who are unable to help their children study at home. “What we do is create self-learning resources that may truly motivate our pupils to learn independently,” Balmeo explained. “Through the implementation of the regional learning continuity plan, we are more than equipped to adapt to the difficulties of the new normal education,” Nicolas Capulong, DepEd regional director, said during an online news briefing on Oct. 2.
